Planning a unicorn first birthday in Washington DC? Yay! I was too. I planned the perfect, at least for us, Unicorn First Birthday in Washington DC with a touch of floral accents. Keep reading for our daughter’s first haircut, unicorn-themed party, a cake smash, and so much fun.
We started the day by taking Grandma and my daughter for a haircut– my daughter’s first! In my family, it’s bad luck to cut a child’s hair before their first birthday, and our kids are born with a lot of hair!
Our first stop was DNA Lab in Frederick, MD. Jessie cut Aurora’s hair, and kudos to her. She was patient and kind, hip and efficient. Aurora’s hair is now a cute bob with bangs– making life so much easier! Aurora loves to pull out any bow.
After the haircut, we did the cake smash. I HIGHLY recommend planning the cake smash before the party. First, at the end of the party, your child will be tired. Most likely asleep. The cake smash is the highlight of the party! A crying, sleepy child does not make for a fun cake smash.
Secondly, if you try to do the cake smash mid-party, you’ll have a messy baby and will probably excuse yourself to wash up the babe and change their clothes. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to step away from a party I’m hosting.
But… do a cake smash! They are so, so much fun.
The most popular element of these photos is the flower hoop. I’m sorry that I can’t share where I got this because…. I made it. It was a Hobby Lobby purchase in the pit of my pre-labor nesting. It’s silk flowers, floral tape, and the wire from a drain snake– the last was my husband’s addition. I used it in my daughter’s nursery before using it for her party.
If you can, buy this, don’t make it. It’s expensive and a pain in the butt to make. If you want more inspiration on similar hoops, here‘s a great blog post on similar hoops.
